✶Hannya-unresolved✶

This sleeve concept is built around the image of a Hannya mask, a figure rooted in traditional Japanese Noh theatre often mistaken for an Oni. The Hannya represents a woman who has been consumed by overwhelming emotion, jealousy, sorrow, and anger eventually transforming her into something terrifying.

Despite its aggressive expression, the Hannya is not simply a symbol of rage. It reflects the depth of human emotion at its most extreme. The moment where love, pain, and obsession become indistinguishable. I’ve been there.

Surrounding the mask are peonies, long associated with beauty, prosperity, and feminine strength. Their soft, layered petals contrast the sharp, contorted features of the mask, creating a balance between elegance and intensity.

Flowing negative space lines move through the composition, driving the eye naturally through the form of the arm. These open areas create breathing room within the design, allowing the heavier black structures and detailed elements to stand out while enhancing movement throughout the sleeve. The dark leaves provide contrast and depth, grounding the composition and reinforcing the tension between light and shadow.

Together, the elements create a visual narrative of duality between beauty and rage, control and chaos, softness and strength. This piece is not just about transformation… it’s about the emotional weight that causes it when heartache is left well, unresolved.
