Devouring the sun
This design was inspired by the tale of Fenrir, the legendary wolf from Norse mythology, placed directly over the heart where power and instinct reside. Fenrir is depicted mid roar, embodying raw strength, untamed spirit, and an unstoppable force.
In Norse legend, Fenrir was a monstrous wolf born of the trickster god Loki. The gods feared his growing strength and attempted to restrain him, eventually binding him with the magical chain Gleipnir. Yet prophecy foretold that during Ragnarök, Fenrir would break free from his restraints and devour the sun, plunging the world into darkness.
The negative space suns on the shoulders reference this myth. Positioned above him, they create a visual tension between light and darkness, the sun that was destined for the beast to one day consume it.
The composition drapes across the shoulders and funnels inward toward the sternum, obscuring Fenrir, guiding the eye directly to through him to the center of the chest. This placement reinforces the symbolic idea of the wolf as a primal force within the heart, instinct, courage, and the untamed nature that lies beneath the surface. Destined for darkness.
Heavy black and contrast give the design weight and intensity, while sweeping negative space patterns across the shoulders and chest introduce contrast and breathing room. This interplay between light and dark creates strong visual depth allowing the wolf to emerge dramatically from the darkness.
The result is a design that balances myth and visual appeal, a powerful symbol of destiny, strength, and our inner dar nature.
